462 metres above the salt

Kalo Dungar is the roof of Kutch. From the summit the Great Rann spreads below like a frozen sea, and on clear winter days you can trace the Indo-Pak border shimmering at the horizon. Sunset from here is the district's single best view.

The Dattatreya temple

The 400-year-old temple at the top is famous for its evening ritual: after aarti, the priests call the jackals of the hill to a cooked offering — a tradition the legend says is as old as the shrine itself.

The magnetic road

On the descent, a stretch of road appears to pull vehicles uphill against gravity. It is an optical illusion of the terrain — but every driver stops to try it anyway.
